Stepout: Frunky

by Katharina Königsbauer, 11. June 2025

The Stepout of Frunky was published in the book ‘Zentangle für jede Gelenheit’.

Frunky – a playful tangle with a special story

Some tangles arise intuitively – from the flow of drawing, playing with familiar forms or the desire to create something of one's own. This is also true of Frunky, a pattern from the pen of Katharina Königsbauer, which has its origin in a combination of two familiar elements.

Frunky was first published in the book ‘Zentangle for Every Occasion’ (GU Verlag). There, Frunky is described as a rhythmic alternation between two patterns, one of which is strongly reminiscent of the typical squiggles of Fescu. The other tangle is Shattuck. Incidentally, if you want, you can replace the squiggles with one of your favourite Fescu variations – this makes Frunky a wonderfully adaptable tangle.

The name itself is a little play on words: inspired by ‘funky’, it shouldn't seem too cool or smooth – rather a bit weird and unique. So, without further ado, funky became Frunky.

It was a special honour for Frunky to be included in a carefully curated collection of selected tangles by Zentangle, Inc. in 2022, which is only available to CZTs. Katharina was thrilled, because Frunky is definitely her favourite self-created tangle.

Do you already know Frunky? We hope you enjoy trying it out – and maybe you will find your own variation, too.
